Adele Webster
Kingston ON

Adele is a British/Canadian artist currently based along the shores of Lake Ontario in Kingston. She focuses on gesture and color, layering washes of paint on wood panels to create her work which is inspired by nature's landscapes. Using a minimalist style she brings balance in an attempt to decipher the everyday chaos towards calm. She intends to create a mood or evoke a dream-like memory that one can escape into while enjoying the playfulness of the contemporary peaceful vista.

Barbara Högenauer
Prince Edward County ON

"My first art lesson took place at a very early age in Berlin, Germany, where I was introduced to galleries, museums and artists.  The seed was planted. I like to think it needed to permeate before being realized.  My muse is the natural world. I love the elusive quality of the landscape, the moving light,  the mystery of what the eye sees.  My canvas typically goes through various layers of paint, building up texture with palette knives and various mark-making tools until the final piece comes into its own - a very intuitive process.   I welcome challenges, often working with small en plein air studies, transferring those to larger canvases. I primarily use acrylic paints but also work with oil and cold wax medium.  Attempting to interpret the natural world, creating work that evokes an emotional impact, is what intrigues and drives me."

Eda Brown
Brockville ON

Eda’s paintings create a sense of place at a particular moment in time. The use of vivid and vibrant colours with quick brush work brings the viewer into a place that can be uniquely their own. Eda has always been a painter. As a young person attending school, art class was her favourite place. Studying Graphic Design imbedded a visual vocabulary and design-sense on which to build. Now Eda spends most of her time in her home studio on the banks of the mighty St Lawrence River where she is inspired by her surroundings each day. Working mainly with oil paint, she creates landscapes which clearly have a loose and painterly feel. Her work has been acquired by collectors in Canada, USA and Europe. "Beauty in nature is everywhere. It is there when I walk my dog in the morning, when I drive down the highway, when I look out my window in any direction. I am grateful for what nature provides us and I feel compelled to capture it’s beauty with paint. The process of painting offers me immense joy and is a lesson in seeing. This is my journey to share with you."

Jackie Kavanagh
Ottawa ON

Jackie says, "I create playful, visually dynamic fibre artwork using traditional handweaving techniques. Each piece is infused with vibrancy, joy, and a sense of whimsy. Weaving is a free flowing, spontaneous and meditative process for me, in contrast to my engineering career, which has been governed by rigid structure. My experience allows me to transform abstract ideas into intricate, handwoven art, where technique and innovation meet to experiment with form and structure in new ways. I love the tactile experience of working with natural fibres and the challenge of creating abstract designs that leave room for personal interpretation. It excites me to create artwork that sparks curiosity about my chosen medium and delights the viewer.  Sustainability is important to me, so preference is given to natural and recycled materials. Scraps of wool and fibre are saved to be used in future artwork."

Laura Kingsbury
Merrickville ON

"I have always been inspired by nature in my professional career as a wildlife biologist and in my artistic career as a painter. I have been painting wildlife and birds for over 40 years but more recently have wandered into painting Canadian landscapes in acrylics. This new medium has reinspired my creative soul.
I grew up in the Thousand Island area, spent my adulthood exploring Georgian Bay and northern Ontario, and have now retired to beautiful Merrickville. A lifetime of inspiration to explore in my paintings!"

Laurel Wilson
Perth ON

"My landscape paintings feature strongly delineated shapes, reminiscent of stained glass, and
Art Nouveau. They are created in layers, built up like the rings of a tree, often becoming
invisible, yet still contributing to the finished painting. Marc Chagall said “Art picks up where nature leaves off.” My intention is not to copy nature, but rather to be inspired by it, and to express the essence the natural world that means so much to me."

Liz Schell
Kingston  ON

Liz says, "I have been creating all my life. From doll clothes at age 7 to adult clothing, original crewel designs to polymer clay jewellery with wire work. During my years building sets at the Domino Theatre I would keep odd cuts of wood that were destined for the trash and turn them into the 'funky' flower boxes first sold at the Women's Art Festival in 2006. I expanded into tables, lidded boxes and 'bird' flower boxes. They are all made with pine boards, cut on the band saw, reattached with wood glue and screws, and eurathaned. My art dolls are my most recent creations and they bring me much joy as they evolve. Art is as vital as breathing to me and anything I can do to support the arts is my happy place."

"This year I have been inspired by the beautiful old barns of Eastern Ontario. So many of them are in decay and I would like to capture them on canvas before they disappear altogether. I see more every time I drive anywhere, and it takes me a long time to arrive anywhere because I can't resist stopping to take photographs."

Michelle Reid
Kingston ON

Michelle Reid has quickly become recognized for her unique abstract-impressionism. Her contemporary landscape paintings in oil are distinct, vibrant, and full of hope. She has been painting for nearly 10 years and currently features both contemporary nature and urban subjects in her work, noted for capturing the sunlight through colour but also for conveying a sense of the spirit of a place. Her work shines so brightly you’ll want to reach for your sunglasses. Michelle says, “I love capturing the moments that I feel grateful to have witnessed, when the light hits just right and illuminates a mistakenly mundane moment. A reminder that beauty is all around and that joy can be inspired in the smallest shift of perspective. I find comfort and the connections made with people through this shared experience is the greatest reward in my practice.”

Monika Rosen
Kingston ON

Monika Rosen is a figurative and landscape painter based in Kingston, holding an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from Queen’s University. Working primarily in oil and fascinated by the relationship between the psyche and the landscape, her paintings navigate themes of vulnerability, transformation, and the rhythms of an interconnected ecosystem. "I turn to the human figure and the elusive, dynamic properties of water to explore the psyche, through change and healing. At the heart of my work is a relational framework—examining vulnerability and transformation within an interconnected ecosystem. The female figure often embodies this journey, though it also takes shape as interwoven figures or a landscape in flux. Central to my practice are light and colour, evoking hope and a space that holds multitudes. An en-plein air practice accompanies my studio work, where the landscape, both a mirror and teacher, deepens how I see. As I look at the landscape, I reflect on wonder, sanctuary, grief, and renewal; in the act of painting it, I apply a sportsmanlike determination to capture the fleeting light, mirroring the transient moments of change I explore in the studio. Through this process, I hope to invite others to feel and see anew."

Monique van Someren
Brockville ON

Monique van Someren is an oil painter, sketchbook artist, and macro photographer. She enjoys working in series, and until recently, her primary focus was on the insects of the Thousand Islands region. However, for this year's Before the Summer Show, she is creating a series called "Garden Party," which depicts the animals that visit her backyard. Monique sets these creatures in scenes inspired by her experiences, stories and dreams. She finds daily motivation as she observes them frolicking on her deck and lawn. A camera is always on standby, providing her endless inspiration and reference material. With this new series, Monique hopes to bring smiles to her viewers which is especially important during challenging times.

Terry Culbert
Prince Edward County ON

"I have drawn since childhood. Upon graduation with honours from Beal School of Art in London, Ontario, my career path took me into television news. For the first few years I worked as an illustrator in the news department. Forty-two years were spent in television behind and in front of the camera. During those years I wrote and illustrated two books: COUNTY ROADS and LUCAN, Home of the Donnellys. Today, I am a full-time artist, creating alongside my life partner, Barbara Högenauer, in our in-house studio-gallery Prince Edward’s County Studio.  Utilizing my drawing skills and my love for colour, my works vary from whimsical to almost illustrative. Each canvas tells a story, often humorous, always bold. My paintings reflect my personality. One of my passions is travelling with Barb in our Dodge Roadtrek called “Painted Lady”, capturing landscapes and people in my sketchbook and through the lens of my camera.  I also do commissions, working step-by-step with my clients."
